The next day, I went to the gym because I wanted to capitalize on my cloud nine mood. I felt like I could have lifted a boulder off the ground and flung it into space with the amount of positive energy that was inside me. That was a rare occurrence because in the past year times had felt as though I wasn’t allowed to feel that happy. It’s almost like playing video games as an adult. You can have a crazy amount of fun doing that but when you’re reminded that you’re in your mid-twenties, something about it makes you feel like you’re wasting time. I generalize and speak for a wide number of people, but that’s how I felt personally. But finally I felt like I was allowed to be happy because I was doing everything that I was supposed to and doing it all right. I had a job, I had a boyfriend, I was practicing looking after a child. I was justified in my happiness for once.

I didn’t do leg machines that day though because my legs were sore from sex. I found it funny that even though I had been going to the gym prior to our little meeting on his couch and then in the bedroom, I was still sore after something like sex. That’s how you knew it was good.

While I was using one of the arm machines, a guy who looked like he worked there in management came up to me. I say that because he wore a different colored shirt with his khakis than everyone else. “Hey I don’t mean to bother you, but we just lost one of our other floor managers and you’re always in here and look put together. Do you or anyone you know have some clerical experience and want to do the job? The owner is this all over the place actor who chews us out if things aren’t done accordingly. I don’t know, he works off impulse, so I’m doing the same.”

All I heard was actor and I was triggered into not thinking straight. I also heard the word manager and felt like anything relating to being a manager was better than being a deadend nanny. I mean, at the end of the day it was just a job, right? It’s not like Daniel would dump me for taking something better. If that was the case, then why was I fearful? Why did it feel wrong to even entertain the discussion?”

“It pays—”

And there it was. The job somehow paid more than the nanny gig and I was sold. “I can do it. I have experience working in a gym while living in LA.” I lied. I just really wanted the gig. And sometimes in business you needed to lie like that.

“Really? That’s dope.” He took out his business card and handed it to me. “Maybe while you’re working out you can send your information and your resume over to the email on this card and if you want, we can get you squared away after your workout.
